Modern Day Superheroes: Your Story Is Your Superpower
Why I tell the story of my own journey with mental health
You are staring down the tunnel of irrationality. Worry begins to take hold. It’s almost as if you are watching a movie of your life. Your mind convinces you that anything bad that can happen, can and will. You obsessively play these situations over and over in your mind. Your efforts are powerless to do anything about it. Beyond the tunnel is rationality. And you know it is there. You catch glimpses every so often in moments of deep breathing and flashes of your own voice saying, ‘this isn’t true,’ ‘it’s all in your head,’ ‘you have been through this before...it always passes.’ And for a microsecond, you feel peace. But it doesn’t last. The tunnel has this incredible power to suffocate you…mentally, emotionally and physically. You see only the outcome that your mind allows…
I was diagnosed in 2010 with Generalized Anxiety Disorder with mild depressive episodes and was medicated from 2010-2013 on anti-anxiety medications. Since then, I have discovered ways to manage my anxiety while working on self improvement, fitness, nutrition and personal development. I live each day hoping to inspire women to have courage to help THEMSELVES.
Why the world needs your mental health story
Everyone has a story that so desperately needs to be told. We are incredibly blessed to live in a world where we can literally connect with THOUSANDS of people on a daily basis. Too often do we only point out the negatives of social media; but in reality, we can harness its magnitude for the greater good! All it takes is COURAGE. Courage to put pride aside, get out of your comfort zone and SPEAK UP. Why? Some may argue that “these are private matters that others have no business in knowing.” To some extent, I agree. But this is different. You have the ability, with your story, to affect change and inspire.
I have always been a massive fan of superheroes. I was always fascinated by how they all had NORMAL everyday struggles like civilians: relationship issues, family tragedies, personal problems, career struggles…even mental health. But at the end of the day, they put on a suit, harnessed their powers, and helped others. YOU have a suit too: Your Story. It goes without saying that sharing your story consistently on a platform to help others, with heart, can be very therapeutic and empowering!

Living with mental illness is a daily struggle that varies from human to human. It falls on such a spectrum that many people who suffer are unaware; and those who suffer knowingly, are more than aware.
